In defense of preserving book reviews as texts of academic interest

The purpose of this essay is to invite reflection on the role of book reviews in the science communication ecosystem. It is based on the idea that in recent years there has been a tendency for book reviews to be published less and less, and that they are no longer valued by evaluators of scholarly work and journal editors. The work is considered to be only exploratory in scope and reflects a personal - and therefore subjective - position of the author, who declares in advance that he considers critical reviews to be very useful documents and that their writing, publication and use should continue to be encouraged. The text is informed by desk research, mainly in English-language publications and by reviewing journal websites. It is considered that sufficient evidence is gathered to show that there is indeed a downward trend in the publication of such documents, for a variety of reasons that are superficially reviewed and considered to be mainly economic in nature. Finally, a series of actions and strategies are proposed that could have a favorable impact on the revaluation and increase of this type of publications in the academic environment.
