Calculation of total energy expenditure (TEE) from predictive equations, allows to identify the daily calorie needs of an individual, so it is important to identify the formula that best estimates this value. The objective of this study was to analyze the equivalence of caloric intake by recording of food consumed in 24 hours (R24-hr) against daily energy requirements estimated using the equations: Harris-Benedict (HB), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations / World Health Organization (FAO/WHO), Institute of Medici- ne (IOM) and Valencia (VA), in sedentary women of normal weight (NW) and overweight or obese (OWO). Twenty-five women volunteered, 14 of NW and 11 with OWO. Daily caloric intake was calculated by R24-hr, and TEE was estimated by the equations of HB, FAO/WHO, IOM and VA. Student’s t test was performed between PA and SPO, for anthropometric variables; Wilcoxon for the TEE by group and Kruskal-Wallis for differences between equations. Caloric intake by R24-hr was similar in PA and SPO, but the requirement calculated by equations was higher in SPO (p≤0.01). FAO/WHO calculated requirements were the same as reported by R24-hr in both PA [1725.3 (1587.6, 1904.2) vs 1952.2 (1366.0, 2392.5)] and SPO [2162.4 (2075.3, 2231.0) vs. 1893.0 (1471.5, 2313.5)]. The IOM formula calculated lower daily requirements than FAO/WHO and R24-hr in SPO (p≤0.01), so its use can avoid caloric overeating in heavier individuals.
