Abstract

A laboratory experiment was conducted with six bean varieties, representing  a  range  in  germination  capacity  and  seedcoat colors; the cultivars were sown and infected with a pathogenic oomycete isolate of Pythium  aphanidermatum   (Edson)  Fitzp. The purpose of this study was to develop a seedling screening technique  for  seed  decay  and  damping-off  diseases,  which are   produced   by   the   pathogenic   species   Pythium aphanidermatum on cultivated beans (Phaseolus  vulgaris   L.). A completely  randomized  design  was  used,  with  a  factorial arrangement  6  x  2  and  three  repetitions;  Factor  A  was represented by cultivars: Mantequilla Tropical, Azufrado, Negro Jamapa, Delicias 71, Agramejo  and  Selección  #  4;  Factor  B consisted of two isolate concentrations, levels  0  and  104  ml-1; experimental unit  (EU)  was  represented  by  20  bean  seeds, sown on a Petri dish. The findings of this  study  indicated  that the  screening  technique  was  successful  to  cause  Pythium diseases and  the  level  of  resistance  was  clearly  associated with  the  cultivar.  «Negro  Jamapa»  (black  seedcoat)  and «Azufrado» (yellow seedcoat) were  the  most  resistant  to  the pathogen; on the other hand, «Delicias 71» and «Selección # 4», which  have  spotty  seedcoat,  were  the  most  susceptible bean cultivars to Pythium . Low percent germination, high seed decay percentage and root  rot  were  damage  and  symptoms associated  with  the  susceptible  cultivars;  moreover,  it  was also  observed  the  presence  of  mycellium.
