Cancer is one of the diseases that most affects the world's population. Currently, there are several cancer treatments, such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Although widely used, these treatments may have low efficiency or cause undesirable side effects due to the lack of selectivity of the drug used. Among these emerging therapies is photodynamic therapy (PDT), which consists of administering a photosensitizer (PS) to the tumor, which is at a later stage stimulated with a light source to react with the oxygen present in the medium and thus produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are highly toxic and can cause cell death. The PDT offers a greater selectivity towards cancer cells as the PS can be injected in a localized manner into the tumor, thus not affecting other nearby organs, and therefore causing fewer side effects. Hopefully, PDT can emerge as an important therapy for the treatment of cancer, which could improve the quality of life of people suffering from this disease.
