Abstract

In Chihuahua the occurrence of occupational diseases and work-related accidents is unknown. This data is fundamental to determine preventive actions required to protect workers´ health. In this study the annual incidence of occupational diseases and work-related accidents (overall, disability, and fatal) were estimated. Occupational diseases were estimated with the same method used in the “Global Burden of Disease” study, and the work-related accidents assuming national data from the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. Additionally 50000 Monte Carlo simulations were performed to improve the initial deterministic estimations. Results shown that approximately 7574 occupational diseases/year occur (equivalent to 5,83/1000 workers-year). The most frequent are musculoskeletal disorders (1,84/1000 workers-year), chronic respiratory diseases (1.44/1000 workers-year), and dermatoses (1,06/1000 workers-year). Approximately 29868 accidents/year occur (equivalent to 22,99/1000 workers-year). From these, 1299 cases can be disabilities (1,00/1000 workers-year) and 117 deaths (0,09/1000 workers-year). These numbers serve like initial estimation of the sanitary problem within enterprises from Chihuahua, and departure point for future preventive interventions and research projects.
