Mineral characterization of ‘Red Delicious’ and ‘Golden Delicious’ apple varieties from two producing countries

Fruit quality is closely related to mineral composition and the relationship among nutrients. There has been an effort to link the foliage mineral standards with fruit quality; however, both leaves and fruits have different mineral content and distinct nutrient requirements. Reference values in post harvest apple fruits were developed in the current research for Golden Delicious and Red Delicious grown in Chihuahua, Mexico and Washington, USA. The mineral content of skin and pulp was determined using the Differential Integrated Diagnosis (DID); mineral and physiological imbalances were evaluated where concentration gradients were observed between skin and pulp for both apple varieties and production regions. Chihuahua varieties showed a 50 % lower Mg content than Washington apples, affecting the relationship with other nutrients such as Ca and K. The content of N and Na in the skin was also lower.
