Nanotechnology consists of the understanding, manipulation and use of the properties that materials have at the nanoscale, whose dimensions are in the range of 1 to 100 nm, for the development of devices with practical utility. In the 1990s, the nanotechnology revolution began thanks to a better understanding of the properties of matter at the nanoscale. These novel properties are derived from a large surface area and include greater chemical reactivity, depression of melting temperatures, high mechanical strength, high electrical conductivity, unusual optical effects, among others. Nanotechnology allows the development of innovative materials with applications in practically all branches of industry. The biomedical, pharmaceutical, electronic, chemical, food, agricultural, construction, textile, cosmetic, sports and manufacturing industries stand out. Despite being present in articles of daily use, society has erroneous perceptions about nanotechnology, mainly due to misinformation. The objective of this communication is to objectively inform about the concept of nanotechnology by presenting, in a simple way, the fundamentals of this discipline and offering examples of real applications.
