Abstract

Since 1997, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, has increased its efforts to reduce levels of air pollutants associated with respiratory and cardiovascular inflammatory processes. The presence of trees in urban areas has proven to be a tool for the removal of contaminants, such as particulate matter (PM), from the local atmosphere. A study was conducted during November 2014 to measure simultaneously five aerodynamic diameters corresponding to 1.0 m, 2.5 m, 4 m, 10 m and total (PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10 and PMTot) at two different sites (one wooded and other not), in order to study the effect vegetation has on the concentrations of the different fractions of particulate matter. The study sites were located approximately in the same area of the city in order to minimize the effects of dispersion by terrain or urban structures. Higher values of particle concentration in all fractions were observed in the least wooded place; however, a significant difference in the removal of the largest fractions (>10 m) was observed. The study shows the importance of green infrastructure into the urban areas of semiarid climates to mitigate exposure to PM>10 μm and justifies financing the incorporation of vegetation into urban areas to reduce the concentration of fine particles.
