Abstract

The economic and social development of populations leads to the need to improve food supply systems. On the one hand, agricultural and livestock development demands an increase in production in order to obtain higher profits and, at the same time, satisfy the nutritional requirements of the population. This has required the use of agrochemicals in order to increase production. The mismanagement of agrochemical application practices can cause serious health problems for the occupationally exposed population. In addition to this, there is the fight against insect pests and other animals that function as vectors transmitting diseases. The application of a large number of chemical substances against various harmful organisms has caused negative effects on human health and damage to ecosystems (Ferrer, 2003). According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pesticides are chemical substances used to prevent, eliminate, repel or mitigate any pest.
