The objective of this paper is to design the geometry of the steering system of a SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) vehicle to determine the required rack travel so the wheels turn in a previously established angle. Position vectors were used to represent the mobile elements in the steering system in both of its different conditions; without steer angle and with the maximum established steer angle. The elements used in the design were the steering arms, the tie rods and the rack, being this last one represented as a displacement vector in a single axis. The remaining elements were represented as fixed magnitude vectors, then equations were determined using a closed loop of the mechanism based on the established conditions (Maximum turn axis, steering geometry), finally the required rack travel was calculated, with this the final pitch circle of the pinion was obtained.
