Abstract

Remote sensors from diverse satellite platforms provide a tool to support decision-making. However, the need to have reliable and ordenated information on production, establishment and management of crops areas triggered this project. The objective is to analyze the spectral separability of agricultural crops of Module 9 in Meoqui county in Chihuahua state. To develop this project, the vectorized digital plane of Irrigation District 005 was geo-referenced through landmarks located by global positioning systems. The landmarks were positioned in several composited Landsat TM images in a scale of 1:50,000. In the sampled areas, the spectral separation analysis of the main crops (chile, pecan, onion, water- melon and alfalfa) was done using 3x3 pixel windows to ob- tain reflectance values for each Landsat TM band. Descrip- tive statistics supported the spectral discrimination. A cartographic map was obtained from Irrigation Module 9 of the district, directing and geo-referenced with high precision. The spectral analysis of the five crops concentrated most information in a rank of 45 ND’s (digital numbers) with 80 minimum values and 125 maximums values in the visible spectrum bands. Band number 3 showed the best capacity to split the spectral signature. For the simultaneous analysis of the five crops and the map generation with successful classifications, a combination of bands 1, 2, 3 and 7 is proposed because these bands offer more information which perfectly and clearly locate different crop spectral signatures.
