Palo colorado (Caesalpinia platyloba S. Watson) it is a specie extensively distributed in Mexico and its wood its used to produce poles to build fences or as stake for crops of vegetables, in addition, has emerged as a legume of great interest for reforestation and for the establishment of agroforestry systems. The present study had the aim to evaluate different pregerminative treatments in vitro and in substrate with the purpose to induce germination in both healthy seeds as in those affected by insects. The treatments applied were: hydrothermal (100 °C) by 10, 20 and 30 min, scarification with water sandpaper Number 400, scarification with concentrated sulphuric acid by 10, 15 and 20 min and an untreated seed lot as a reference. The best results were obtained with the sandpaper scarification (100 %), followed by acid scarification by 15 min (86.7 %), and at last the hydrothermal treatment by 10 min (83.3 %). In a second bioassay were chosen the best treatments: hydrothermal by 10 min, acid by 15 min, sandpaper scarification, to evaluate the germination in a Promix-vermiculite (1:1) substrate showing a similar result in regard of the germination and in addition all treatments showed the same quality of plant.
