Alcohol, Tobacco, and Nonprescription Drug Use in Family Caregivers: A Scoping Review

Currently, society is exposed to various forms of drug supply such as alcohol, tobacco and non-prescribed drugs, and a vulnerable group to suffer the consequences of their use and abuse are family caregivers of people with chronic diseases. For this reason, it is considered necessary to examine the available scientific evidence on the use of alcohol, tobacco, and non-prescribed medications among caregivers of individuals with chronic health conditions, its relationship with caregiver burden, and its impact on caregivers' health. Methodology. Scoping review where a search in databases was carried out, as a search strategy DeCS and Mesh descriptors were included in the possible combinations, as well as boolean operators. Results. 15 articles were selected and classified into 3 main topics; alcohol, tobacco and drug use in caregivers, coping strategies of caregivers and impact on health and risk behaviors in caregivers. Conclusion. Family caregivers constitute a population at risk for the onset of unhealthy behaviors that include the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and non-prescribed drugs, this consumption is present to a greater or lesser extent in caregivers so it should be a topic to be explored and studied in greater detail.
