An important aspect to consider in grasslands reseeding pro- grams is the variety of the species to use. However, there is limited information to determine the proper variety to use in these kinds of programs. The objective of this study was to evaluate growth patterns of five sideoats grama genotypes (Bouteloua curpendula). Three commercial varieties (Vaughn, Niner and El Reno) and two native ecotypes (E-689 and E-592) were studied. The variables aerial biomass production (ABP), root biomass production (RBP), leaf area (LA), chlorophyll concentration index (CCI) were evaluated on a weekly basis. In addition, three growth indexes were included: net assimilation rate (NAR), relative growth rate (RGR) and absolute growth rate (AGR). Data were analyzed by regression and variance analysis using the GLM procedure of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) software. The behavior of the genotypes showed differences on ABP (P<0.05), RBP (P<0.05), LA (P<0.01) and CCI (P<0.001). The genotype E-689 presented the highest increase in all the variables evaluated. Moreover, it also presented the highest RGR and AGR with an average of 0.177 g g-1 day-1 and 0.458 g day-1, respectively; which represented an increment of 22 % and 39 %, in comparison with the others genotypes. In conclusion, the genotype E-689, which presented the highest growth indexes, probably has a higher productive potential than the other genotypes evaluated. In addition, it presented the highest leaf area and chlorophyll concentration index and therefore, it possibly contains forage of a greater quality. Thus, it is recommended to reproduce and evaluate this genotype under field conditions for its potential to be released as a new variety.
