In natural conduits and in artificial channels, it is common to find that the physical characteristic of the extracted water is altered by the presence of sediment in the flow, the deposit of said particles on the bottom and walls of the conduction causes that the value of the Wet perimeter roughness would be modified. For to calculate the velocity or flow rate of such flows with empirical equations such as Chezy-Manning requires that this physical change would be considered when the roughness coefficient «n» of the cross-section of the channel would be calculated. The present study had as objective to calculate the roughness coefficient in a channel with presence of sediment. The work was done in the trapezoidal channel of the hydraulic laboratory of the campus of the National University of Loja. It was divided into 3 sections, one without sediment (beginning), the second with presence of sediment (middle part) and a control section through a 90º weir (final part). For them, two methodologies were applied: i) the roughness coefficient weighted with the equation of Horton-Einsten and ii) the graphical method with the relation between the function ᵩ(R/k) and the value of the diameter of the particles (k). As a result, it was determined that, the roughness coefficient can be expressed as a function of the diameter of the sediment particles. With the new value of «n» in the Manning equations, the velocity and flow values were closer to those measured with the current meter.
