The chemistry of perfumes and essences is an area of chemistry of great economic relevance. The origin of these dates to antiquity when resins and essential oils were used in religious practices. Although in its beginnings its use was restricted to royalty and priests, over time, the use of perfumes and fragrances became more popular. Currently, it is an activity of great economic relevance derived from the use of chemical compounds not only in the production of perfumes but also in mass-consumption products such as soaps, detergents and shampoo. With the aim of sparking the interest of readers, especially young people with an inclination towards chemical sciences, this article presents an overview of the chemistry related to both natural and synthetic raw materials used in the production of perfumes and fragrances, its origin and chemical structure, as well as some applications, is discussed in a general way.
