The Intercensal Survey conducted in 2015 by Mexico’s National Statistics and Geography Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía, INEGI) makes it possible to analyze in detail the family structures in Chihuahua, Mexico. To this end, this study takes a multidimensional approach to these structures that considers the dynamics of authority, the legal framework of rights and obligations, parentage, processes of stability and transition, and basic and complementary systems of social relationships. The application of this perspective resulted in the identification of four main family types in the state, based on whether they are headed by married couples, cohabiting couples, single women or single men, divided into 22 different subtypes. Altogether, these four family types account for 84.5 % of households in Chihuahua; another 12.4 % are single-person households, while another small group is made up of four different household types (3.1 % in total). A comparative analysis is also offered of the results of the Population and Housing Censuses for 2000 and 2010.
