Adsorption and ion exchange are considered to be the most effective and feasible techniques for removing heavy metals from water. Recent research has reported the use of zeolites to remove arsenic from water. In Mexico, large deposits of this mineral have been identified in the north, center and south of the country, with important differences due to the geological setting and environmental influence where they are found. The objective was to know the arsenic removal in water of natural zeolites from northern and central Mexico. Two deposits were selected, one in the state of Chihuahua (MACh) and the other in the state of Guanajuato (MSF). They were characterized geologically, physically and chemically by different techniques: petrography (thin films), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning microscopy (SEM). Adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and finally the adsorption capacity was measured using packed columns. The minerals presented different composition (type and proportion of zeolites), as well as the Si/Al ratio. The adsorption isotherm tests, adsorption kinetics and packed columns demonstrated the removal capacity of each material, with the zeolite from central Mexico offering the highest retention by ion exchange.
