An interrogation on democracy, makes it necessary to reflect on the concept of the political from which it is thought. The purpose of this paper is to explore the way in which a certain concept of the political is present in the visions of democracy held by authors such as Max Webber, Carl Schmitt and Joseph Schumpeter, who at the theoretical level constitute referents of the theory and political philosophy at the beginning of the 20th century. Going back to them will allow us to understand the way in which a certain concept of politics is installed as a basis for understanding democracy, having as a correlate the configuration of a subjectivity, citizen and people, ultimately apolitical. In contrast, it will be suggested that a different conception of politics, centered on conflict, under the guise of the Mouffe and Jacques Ranciere tracksuit, will be key to thinking about the configuration of an agonal citizen ethos in the face of the threats that democracy faces today.
