Abstract

The fertility of language, impressions and moods in Juan José Arreola's short stories make the hermeneutic approach proposed by Mauricio Beuchot an optimal tool for analysis. This article presents a hermeneutic approach to the story “Autrui”. The analysis was guided by Arreola's experiences and reflections expressed in interviews with Emmanuel Carballo and Fernando del Paso, as well as in other stories by the author. In “Autrui”, the author addresses issues that concern him, first of all, isolation and loneliness, with more distant references to the impossibility of love, women, physical decadence, and literary creation.
