Domestication and Foreignization in two versions of Juan Rulfo’s "Talpa"

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative review between two English versions of the short story “Talpa” by Juan Rulfo. The first version (1967), was carried out by George D. Schade; the latter (2012), by Ilan Stavans and Harold Aguenbraum. The comparison, based on Antoine Berman’s approach to literary retranslation criticism (1995), is in terms of domestication and foreignization. The dimensions of position, project, and horizon are thus considered. It is concluded that the first version is more domesticating whereas the latter tends to be more foreignizing.

  • Erbey Mendoza, UACH

    He is a professor in the Bachelor's Program in English Language, the Master's in Humanistic Research, and the Doctorate in Education, Arts, and Humanities at the School of Philosophy and Letters of UACH. He also teaches in the Master's in Language, Literature, and Translation at the School of Languages of UABJO. He is the translator of La expedición punitiva: reporte del General Mayor John J. Pershing, co-author of the poetry collections Entorno de los días, and El destino en un sombrero, as well as Arreolario: diálogos interdisciplinarios con Juan José Arreola. He has also authored several research articles published in academic journals. He is currently a member of the Team on Humanistic Cultural Studies and of the National System of Researchers.
