New information and communication technologies have revolutionized the way we access information. The digital transformation, driven by ICT, is revolutionizing organizations and this transformation has not been the exception in education. Online higher education has emerged as a fundamental component in the 21st century educational sphere, challenging and transforming traditional teaching and learning paradigms. In an increasingly interconnected and technologically advanced world, online higher education has gained traction due to its accessibility, flexibility, and ability to reach diverse audiences in different geographic locations. The objective of this essay is to reflect on the challenges facing online higher education in the 21st century. It is imminent that online higher education faces a number of challenges, which also represent opportunities to transform the way it is taught and learned, as well as to expand access to quality education around the world.
