Technology has permeated all aspects of our society, including education. In this context, the use of open-source software in educational institutions has become increasingly relevant. This article thoroughly analyzes the benefits of open-source software in the educational field, highlighting its potential for economic savings, equal access to technology, flexibility and adaptability, freedom and autonomy, values education, promotion of innovation and creativity, as well as additional benefits such as security and contribution to the open-source community. Additionally, it discusses how education must adapt to technological and social changes, emphasizing the importance of key competencies and Project-Based Learning methodology to prepare students for an uncertain but opportunity-filled future.
