Abstract
Introduction: Cytokines are biochemical markers related to inflammation. Although it is known that fibromyalgia (FM) is not considered an inflammatory disease, cytokines could be related to the presence of some symptoms that patients with this pathology present, such as pain, fatigue and difficulty sleeping. Objective: to analyze the presence of inflammatory cytokines in fibromyalgia and their relationship with inflammation, pain and other symptoms present in the disease. Methodology: A systematic review was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, using the words fibromyalgia, cytokines, inflammation and inflammatory biomarkers as search criteria. Results: A total of 532 articles were found, obtaining as a final result eight articles that corresponded to the inclusion criteria. Discussion and/or conclusions: Inflammatory cytokines are present at higher levels in patients with FM than in healthy women, having a relationship with the presence of pain; however, more research is necessary to provide support for this theory.
