Problems and Difficulties of Translating The Lady in the Looking-Glass. A Reflection by Virginia Woolf into Spanish

Abstract

The Lady in the Looking-Glass. A Reflection by Virginia Woolf will be analyzed in this paper. The methodology is translation problems and difficulties proposed and differentiated by Christiane Nord, focused in 3 relevant scenarios found in the Spanish translation, La señora en el espejo: un reflejo, translated by Juan Bravo Castillo. Said scenarios are: the word “reflection” in the title (1), the story’s opening and closing sentence (2), and the pronoun “one” (3). Scenarios 1 and 2 are classified as text-specific translation problems; scenario 3, as a translator-related difficulty. These scenarios and their classification show how important the analysis, pragmatic and linguistic comprehension, and research, if it is a well-known and well-studied text, of the source text, and coherence and consistency in the target text are.
