This study analyzed the perceptions of pre-service elementary school teachers regarding the role, usefulness, and teaching of Physical Education in multigrade primary schools, as well as their evaluation of the training received in the fourth-semester course entitled “Physical Education and Health” to address such contexts. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed, involving the participation of 25 students enrolled in the aforementioned semester of the Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary School Education at the Benemérita Escuela Normal “Manuel Ávila Camacho” in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. Data was collected through a semi-structured interview administered via Google Forms and analyzed using MAXQDA software through categorical coding.
The results revealed that students’ perceptions are shaped by the absence or limited presence of Physical Education teachers in multigrade primary schools in the state, as well as by pedagogical interventions that lack systematic organization. Participants acknowledged the value of Physical Education for students’ physical-motor, social, and emotional development, considering the presence of a specialized teacher in this area to be essential. Furthermore, they reported feeling insufficiently prepared to teach this subject, although they demonstrated basic skills in designing instructional proposals adapted to heterogeneous groups.
