PROFILE OF THE GRASSROOTS SOCCER REFEREE IN THREE LEAGUES IN THE NORTHWEST OF THE VALLEY OF MEXICO FOR A BETTER EDUCATIONAL CONTRIBUTION

Introduction: Currently, it is important to have trained and professional referees who contribute to the educational process in children's and youth soccer in Mexico. Their effective performance depends largely on their ability, skills, and knowledge. Unfortunately, this profile is lacking in studies in the country. Objective: To describe the personal and educational profile of sixty youth soccer referees, highlighting: level and area of study, institutional affiliation of academic training, gender, motivations and years of experience, who work in the northwestern region of the Valley of Mexico, given its importance in the educational process, seeking reflection on real and ideal profiles. Methodology: This is a non-experimental, exploratory, empirical study that collected data using a specially designed semi-structured interview and a quantitative and qualitative description of the profile's characteristics. The results exclude women; they have a minimum high school diploma; there is a lack of institutional federation training; they express a vocation; and they recognize training to improve their roles as referees and educators. The discussion reflects on the lack of appropriate profiles, the absence of institutional and research guidance, and its main consequence, expressed in limited training contributions for practitioners. Conclusions: The need for greater and better education, training, and research on referee profiles that meet the educational needs of the current context, as an area of opportunity to contribute to the comprehensive development of children and adolescents in national youth soccer.
