Librarianship has evolved from Antiquity to the digital age, becoming a crucial field in knowledge management. Key figures such as Callimachus of Cyrene, Isidore of Seville, Gabriel Naudé, Antonio Panizzi, Melvil Dewey, Paul Otlet, and S.R. Ranganathan developed classification systems, organizational principles, and access models that continue to shape the discipline. The transformation of libraries from mere book repositories to information centers has been driven by these contributions.
In the digital era, librarianship has integrated tools such as databases, artificial intelligence, and information retrieval systems, enabling more equitable access to knowledge. In Mexico, figures like José María de Ágreda y Sánchez, Juana Manrique de Lara, and Estela Morales Campos have promoted education and research in the field. Despite technological advancements, libraries remain essential for education and cultural preservation. Librarianship extends beyond physical libraries, encompassing knowledge management in digital and academic environments, ensuring its continued relevance in the future.
