La bibliotecología ha evolucionado desde la Antigüedad hasta la era digital, consolidándose como un campo esencial en la gestión del conocimiento. Figuras clave como Calímaco de Cirene, San Isidoro de Sevilla, Gabriel Naudé, Antonio Panizzi, Melvil Dewey, Paul Otlet y S.R. Ranganathan han desarrollado sistemas de clasificación, principios organizativos y modelos de acceso que aún influyen en la disciplina. La transición de las bibliotecas de meros depósitos de libros a centros de información ha sido posible gracias a estos avances.
En la era digital, la bibliotecología ha integrado herramientas como bases de datos, inteligencia artificial y sistemas de recuperación de información, permitiendo un acceso más equitativo al conocimiento. En México, figuras como José María de Ágreda y Sánchez, Juana Manrique de Lara y Estela Morales Campos han impulsado la educación e investigación en este campo. A pesar de los cambios tecnológicos, las bibliotecas siguen siendo fundamentales para la educación y la preservación cultural. La bibliotecología, más allá de la biblioteca física, abarca la gestión del conocimiento en entornos digitales y académicos, asegurando su relevancia en el futuro.
